This World Maths Day, 26 March, Peregrine Capital has launched its 24SumMore Maths competition nationally.
This CSI initiative is designed to energise maths education in primary schools and give learners across Grades 4 to 6 the tools, confidence and motivation to excel.
Following the success of a pilot programme that ran in 54 primary schools in Gauteng last year, the campaign is now rolling out nationally to more than 300 schools across South Africa.
The 24SumMore competition brings the excitement of mental maths into classrooms through a fast-paced, engaging format that challenges learners to think quickly and creatively.
It makes maths learning fun and accessible, helping learners build confidence while competing for meaningful prizes. In doing so, the programme shifts how learners relate to maths, from a subject to be feared to a skill to be celebrated.
“Mathematical excellence doesn’t happen by accident - it is nurtured. This competition reflects our continued commitment to developing confident learners who see maths as a skill worth celebrating. The problem-solvers we support in our schools today are the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,” said Jacques Conradie, CEO of Peregrine Capital and a former national maths champion.
The competition is run directly by schools, providing learners and teachers with a structured and engaging event that brings schools together around a shared goal.
Prizes include:
Learner prizes: Investment accounts for the top three learners 1st – R25 000, 2nd – R15 000, 3rd – R10 000
School prizes: The schools of the top three learners receive R25 000, R15 000, R10 000
Teacher prize: The teacher demonstrating exceptional dedication receives a brand-new iPad.
Investment accounts were selected to encourage an early understanding of financial literacy and long-term saving.
As South Africa’s longest-running hedge fund firm, Peregrine Capital recognises the critical role that financial and mathematical literacy play in economic participation. “We see this initiative as far more than a competition. It reflects our belief that access to excellent maths education should not be a privilege,” added Conradie.
World Maths Day, observed annually on 26 March, highlights the importance of numeracy skills in shaping life outcomes. Peregrine Capital’s decision to launch the 24SumMore competition on this day underscores its commitment to making maths matter — not just in the boardroom, but in every classroom.

The Many Hats a Financial Advisor Wears
Ask most people what a financial advisor does and you get some version of the same answer: they pick investments. That is the visible part of the job, in the way that a prescription is the visible part of what a doctor does. The value sits in everything that happens before it. Writing for Moneyweb, Anne Holding, an investment specialist at Peregrine Capital, sets out the roles a good advisor takes on across an investor's life. Specialist, demystifier, coach, therapist, architect. She also explains why much of that work leaves nothing to point to, because its purpose was prevention.

Leading Beyond the Numbers
"Technical competence is the entry ticket, not the differentiator." That line, from Tania Formilan, CFO and COO at Peregrine Capital, is a fair test for anyone building a career in this industry. At a senior level, everyone can do the numbers. What separates people is lateral thinking, judgement, integrity, and the ability to build genuine trust with clients and colleagues. Tania qualified as a CA(SA) in 2000 and joined Peregrine more than 25 years ago, moving from a finance role into operational leadership as the business grew. In that time she has watched South African hedge funds shift from a largely unregulated corner of the market, viewed with scepticism by the broader investment community, to a regulated part of the collective investment landscape, held to the same standards of governance, transparency and risk management as any other asset manager. On what matters most: never lose sight of the fact that people, not processes, get things done. Companies succeed when their people do. Her full interview appears in the Women in Hedge Funds II special report, published by HedgeNews Africa. Our thanks to HedgeNews Africa and Tania Formilan.
