On Friday 31 October, Peregrine Capital’s offices in Sandton buzzed with energy as 24 bright young finalists from 18 primary schools across Gauteng participated in the dynamic pilot programme designed to make maths exciting, engaging, and confidence-building for learners.

Empowering the next generation of problem-solvers

From the start, 24SumMore aimed to reimagine maths as something thrilling, creative, and social - not just another subject on the timetable. Based on the “24 Game” challenge format, the competition rewards quick thinking, strategy, and mental agility. Both learners and teachers from 54 schools embraced the format with enthusiasm and competitiveness, transforming classrooms into hubs of excitement and discovery.

“We’re bringing the fun back into maths,” said Jacques Conradie, CEO of Peregrine Capital and a former national maths champion in Maths 24. “When kids enjoy maths, they gain confidence. This confidence becomes the foundation for future excellence. Confident kids don’t just solve problems; they learn to love solving them.”

Celebrating excellence

The 24 finalists battled it out for top honours, showcasing their skill and composure under pressure. The finalists were a mixture of grade 4s, grade 5s and grade 6s who all play at the same level.

Prizes

• Learner Prizes: Investment accounts for the top three learners (1st – R25 000, 2nd – R15 000, 3rd – R10 000).

All finalists also received R5 000 in an investment account.

• School Prizes: The schools of the top three learners received R25 000, R15 000 and R10 000 respectively.

• Teacher Prize: The teacher who demonstrated exceptional dedication received a brand-new iPad.

Investment accounts were chosen to spark an early interest in financial literacy and long-term financial planning among learners.

Congratulations to the winners and the schools:

1st – Olwethu Ndebele – Eastleigh Primary School

2nd – Talea Papa – Gibson Pillay Learning Academy

3rd – Kemoratile Nyundu – Eastleigh Primary School

The Teacher’s Award went to Mrs Fahmeeda Hajee from King Edward V11 Preparatory School.

Looking ahead: Going national in 2026

Following the resounding success of the pilot, Peregrine Capital is thrilled to announce that the 24SumMore Maths Competition will go national in 2026, opening participation to learners from Grades 4 to 6 across South Africa. This expansion reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to fostering a generation of confident problem-solvers, young minds who see maths not as a challenge to fear, but as a skill to celebrate.

More than a competition

24SumMore energised by Peregrine Capital is about more than winning prizes. It’s about nurturing curiosity, building perseverance, and helping learners realise that they can do maths and love it. The programme has sparked a renewed excitement for the subject among both learners and teachers.

“What we’ve seen in the pilot has been extraordinary,” added Conradie. “The passion and joy from learners and teachers alike are just the beginning. Congratulations to all our finalists! You’ve done yourselves, your families, and your schools proud. We look forward to introducing the competitive but fun format to thousands of learners across South Africa.”

The Many Hats a Financial Advisor Wears

Ask most people what a financial advisor does and you get some version of the same answer: they pick investments. That is the visible part of the job, in the way that a prescription is the visible part of what a doctor does. The value sits in everything that happens before it. Writing for Moneyweb, Anne Holding, an investment specialist at Peregrine Capital, sets out the roles a good advisor takes on across an investor's life. Specialist, demystifier, coach, therapist, architect. She also explains why much of that work leaves nothing to point to, because its purpose was prevention.

Leading Beyond the Numbers

"Technical competence is the entry ticket, not the differentiator." That line, from Tania Formilan, CFO and COO at Peregrine Capital, is a fair test for anyone building a career in this industry. At a senior level, everyone can do the numbers. What separates people is lateral thinking, judgement, integrity, and the ability to build genuine trust with clients and colleagues. Tania qualified as a CA(SA) in 2000 and joined Peregrine more than 25 years ago, moving from a finance role into operational leadership as the business grew. In that time she has watched South African hedge funds shift from a largely unregulated corner of the market, viewed with scepticism by the broader investment community, to a regulated part of the collective investment landscape, held to the same standards of governance, transparency and risk management as any other asset manager. On what matters most: never lose sight of the fact that people, not processes, get things done. Companies succeed when their people do. Her full interview appears in the Women in Hedge Funds II special report, published by HedgeNews Africa. Our thanks to HedgeNews Africa and Tania Formilan.
