In the ever-evolving world of financial markets, where trends shift like tides and uncertainties loom like storm clouds, a steadfast approach to investment can make all the difference. Peregrine Capital distinguishes itself with an investment philosophy anchored in a fundamental, bottom-up, valuation-focused approach. This unchanged philosophy has served as our compass for the last 26 years, guiding us through the complexities of the market while ensuring we remain true to our mission: creating real wealth for our clients.
The Foundation: A Bottom-Up, Valuation-Focused Approach
At the heart of Peregrine Capital's Philiosphy lies a commitment to understanding the intrinsic value of investment opportunities. Our primary objective is to avoid detractors within our funds. Thanks to our flexible mandate, we can concentrate solely on our best ideas, as we do not merely track a benchmark or adhere to a strategic asset allocation.
Our focus is on investing in uncorrelated opportunities within the funds, where each position has the potential to outperform rather than chasing fleeting market trends. This bottom-up approach allows us to concentrate on the fundamentals—analysing financial statements, constructing our own investment models, visiting companies, and engaging in discussions not only with management teams but also with individuals across the business’s board—before making investment decisions.
In the realm of investments, alignment of interests is crucial. Peregrine Capital’s staff and management have a significant portion of their own wealth invested alongside our investors, collectively making us the third largest investor in our funds. This alignment ensures that our team is fully committed to the interests of those who choose to partner with us.
In today’s financial landscape, characterised by rapid technological advancements and shifting consumer behaviours, this approach is more pertinent than ever. Companies that once thrived may falter, while unexpected players can emerge as market leaders. By focusing on the underlying value of each investment, we position ourselves to identify opportunities that others may overlook.
Refinement and Adaptation: The Art of Continuous Improvement
While our guiding principles remain steadfast, we recognise that the market is dynamic. Just as a seasoned sailor adjusts their sails to navigate changing winds, we continually refine our investment process to adapt to new information and market conditions. This iterative approach ensures we remain agile and responsive, allowing us to seize opportunities as they arise.
For example, when we identify market fluctuations, we view these as opportunities to reassess our portfolio and identify undervalued assets that may benefit from shifts in economic conditions. By remaining vigilant and adaptable, we enhance our investment thesis and better serve our clients.
Conclusion: A Steady Course in Uncertain Waters
As we navigate the complexities of today’s financial markets, Peregrine Capital remains committed to our investment philosophy anchored in fundamental analysis and valuation. By focusing on companies' intrinsic value, continually refining our processes, and fostering alignment with our clients, we are well-equipped to weather storms and seize opportunities that lie ahead.
In a world where market trends can change quickly, our steadfast approach is a beacon of stability and allows us to navigate the financial landscape confidently and purposefully. Just as a lighthouse guides ships safely to shore, our philosophy illuminates the path toward sustainable wealth creation, ensuring we remain true to our mission and our clients’ aspirations of delivering risk-adjusted returns.

The Many Hats a Financial Advisor Wears
Ask most people what a financial advisor does and you get some version of the same answer: they pick investments. That is the visible part of the job, in the way that a prescription is the visible part of what a doctor does. The value sits in everything that happens before it. Writing for Moneyweb, Anne Holding, an investment specialist at Peregrine Capital, sets out the roles a good advisor takes on across an investor's life. Specialist, demystifier, coach, therapist, architect. She also explains why much of that work leaves nothing to point to, because its purpose was prevention.

Leading Beyond the Numbers
"Technical competence is the entry ticket, not the differentiator." That line, from Tania Formilan, CFO and COO at Peregrine Capital, is a fair test for anyone building a career in this industry. At a senior level, everyone can do the numbers. What separates people is lateral thinking, judgement, integrity, and the ability to build genuine trust with clients and colleagues. Tania qualified as a CA(SA) in 2000 and joined Peregrine more than 25 years ago, moving from a finance role into operational leadership as the business grew. In that time she has watched South African hedge funds shift from a largely unregulated corner of the market, viewed with scepticism by the broader investment community, to a regulated part of the collective investment landscape, held to the same standards of governance, transparency and risk management as any other asset manager. On what matters most: never lose sight of the fact that people, not processes, get things done. Companies succeed when their people do. Her full interview appears in the Women in Hedge Funds II special report, published by HedgeNews Africa. Our thanks to HedgeNews Africa and Tania Formilan.
